Background of the Study
Pottery-making traditions in Esan Central Local Government Area, Edo State, provide a vital archaeological record of cultural and technological evolution. Traditional pottery, with its distinct stylistic features and functional designs, offers insights into the daily lives, trade practices, and artistic expressions of past communities (Akinola, 2023). Archaeological excavations have uncovered fragments and whole vessels that illuminate the techniques and materials used in pottery production, reflecting both utilitarian and ritualistic roles (Ibid, 2024). These traditions have been passed down through generations, contributing to the local identity and cultural continuity of the region. However, modernization and industrial influences threaten the survival of these artisanal skills. The decline in traditional methods due to mass-produced alternatives calls for a re-evaluation of pottery as a cultural artifact and an economic resource. This study investigates the interplay between ancient pottery-making traditions and contemporary cultural practices, emphasizing the need to preserve indigenous knowledge and skills. It also explores how archaeological evidence can be harnessed to promote cultural tourism and academic inquiry into the rich history of Edo State (Ola, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Traditional pottery-making in Esan Central is under threat due to rapid modernization and the influx of industrially produced ceramics. The erosion of artisanal techniques not only diminishes cultural heritage but also leads to a loss of archaeological evidence critical for understanding historical lifestyles (Adewale, 2023). Insufficient documentation and preservation efforts further compound the problem, risking the disappearance of unique cultural identifiers. This study addresses the urgent need to document and analyze pottery-making traditions, ensuring that the archaeological record of indigenous craftsmanship is preserved and appreciated (Babatunde, 2024).
